Key Points at a Glance
Connecticut is considering becoming the first U.S. state to legalize in-flight sports betting. A new bill, House Bill 6051, aims to allow travelers to place bets while flying. The initiative is being spearheaded by Representative Christopher Rosario and could generate additional state revenue. However, there is also opposition to the proposal.
Planned Legalization of In-Flight Sports Betting
House Bill 6051, introduced by State Representative Christopher Rosario, proposes allowing passengers on flights to and from Connecticut to place sports bets. The proposal comes at a time when Delta Airlines has partnered with betting provider DraftKings to explore opportunities for in-flight wagering. Rosario highlights the economic potential: “Sports betting is a growing market in Connecticut. If this opportunity arises, we should take advantage of it.”
Economic Importance of Sports Betting in Connecticut
The sports betting market in Connecticut generates significant revenue. In November 2024 alone, $30.3 million in revenue was recorded, according to the Department of Consumer Protection. Under the proposed bill, 1% of in-flight betting revenue would be allocated to public education, supporting both urban and rural schools.
Criticism and Concerns
Despite the financial benefits, there is opposition to the proposal. U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal warns of the risks of gambling on airplanes. He describes the initiative as “a potential danger” and points out that gambling on flights is currently prohibited. Blumenthal has introduced the SAFE Bet Act, a federal law aimed at regulating sports betting and curbing gambling addiction. Young passengers, in particular, could be at risk due to the availability of in-flight betting.
Next Steps for the Bill
House Bill 6051 is now being discussed in the General Law Committee. Rosario acknowledges the challenges but emphasizes that his primary goal is to initiate a debate: “It’s a concept. I at least want to start a discussion and see how it develops.”
Our Assessment
The idea of legalizing in-flight sports betting could bring additional revenue to Connecticut. The partnership between Delta Airlines and DraftKings demonstrates that there are technological possibilities for in-flight wagering. At the same time, concerns regarding gambling addiction and the unique environment of an airplane are not unfounded. The upcoming legislative discussions will determine whether the proposal moves forward.
