Trump Orders U.S. Bitcoin Reserve from Seized Crypto

The Most Important Points at a Glance

Donald Trump has signed an order to create a strategic Bitcoin reserve. This reserve will consist exclusively of confiscated or seized cryptocurrencies. The U.S. government does not plan to purchase Bitcoin or altcoins. However, the Treasury Department is authorized to develop strategies for acquiring additional Bitcoin in a budget-neutral manner.

Strategic Bitcoin Reserve: What Does It Mean?

The new order provides for the creation of a strategic Bitcoin reserve. This reserve will be filled with Bitcoin confiscated by the U.S. government in criminal or civil proceedings. According to David Sacks, Trump’s appointed “Crypto Czar,” this will not incur any additional costs for taxpayers.

No Bitcoin Purchases by the Government

Despite the establishment of the reserve, the U.S. government does not plan to purchase Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies directly. This contrasts with countries like El Salvador, which actively buys Bitcoin as a state reserve. However, the Treasury Department is authorized to develop strategies to acquire Bitcoin without additional costs to taxpayers.

The Role of the U.S. Digital Asset Stockpile

In addition to the Bitcoin reserve, the “U.S. Digital Asset Stockpile” has also been announced. This will include altcoins such as Ethereum (ETH), XRP, Cardano (ADA), and Solana (SOL). Here too, the holdings will consist exclusively of confiscated or seized assets. The government will not acquire additional cryptocurrencies for this stockpile.

Our Assessment

The creation of a strategic Bitcoin reserve by the U.S. government shows that cryptocurrencies are increasingly being recognized as relevant assets. However, the U.S. remains cautious, as no active purchases are planned. The possibility of acquiring Bitcoin in a budget-neutral manner could have a long-term impact on the market. The development of this strategy remains to be seen.
